Setting Your Motor at the Right Depth

A quick guide for NK Series kayak motors and NT Series outboards

Use this to answer the common customer question: how deep should the motor run, how do I measure it, and why does it matter?

Why depth matters

Motor depth simply means how far the propeller sits below the surface of the water. Getting it right keeps the prop pulling, keeps the motor cool, and protects your speed and battery range. There is a sweet spot, and missing it in either direction costs you performance.

Too shallow is the bigger problem. If the prop is too close to the surface, it pulls air down from above instead of biting solid water. This is called ventilation (or cavitation). The motor revs up, but the boat barely moves, you hear a whine or surge, and the motor can run hot because it is spinning with no load.

Too deep costs you too. Running deeper than necessary adds drag, which slows you down and drains the battery faster, shortening your range. On a kayak or small boat in shallow water, a deep lower unit is also far more likely to catch the bottom, rocks, or weeds.

The goal: deep enough that the propeller stays fully underwater at all times — even in chop, in turns, and as the bow rises — but no deeper than it needs to be.

The simple rule (works for any motor)

On calm water, with the boat sitting level and the motor straight down (no trim or tilt), check two things:

  1. The whole propeller is underwater, with water above the top blade. Aim for the top of the prop sitting a few inches (about 3–4 in.) below the surface so it never breaks the surface in waves or turns.
  2. On an outboard, use the plate as your reference. The flat fin just above the prop (the anti-ventilation / cavitation plate) should sit roughly level with the bottom of the hull — within about an inch is fine.

If you only remember one thing: keep the prop buried, and keep it shallow enough to clear the bottom. The two sections below show exactly how that plays out for each motor type.

NK Series kayak motors (NK300 HD & NK180 HD)

How they mount: NK motors attach with a four-bolt bracket and a height-adjustment clamp. The shaft slides up and down, so depth is adjustable — you set it for the water you are fishing, and re-set it when conditions change. That adjustability is the whole point of the design.

How to set the depth
  • Start in calm, deeper water. Lower the motor until the propeller is fully submerged with a few inches of water over the top blade.
  • A kayak sits low, so you rarely need much depth. You mainly need enough that the prop does not suck air when you turn or hit boat wake.
  • Heading into shallow or weedy water? Slide the motor up so the lower unit clears the bottom. Raising it an inch or two is normal — just don't raise it so far that the prop starts to ventilate.
Depth range numbers (handy for the NK180 HD)

Newport publishes a measured depth range for the NK180 HD, which is useful when a customer asks for specifics:

  • Deepest position: about 19 in. measured from the bottom of the bracket to the centerline of the prop.
  • Shallowest position: about 15.5 in. from the center of the prop to the base of the bracket.

Need to run even shallower? The NK180 HD's redesigned (angled) lift arm sets that minimum. To go higher, add a second clamp or reposition the bottom clamp above the black plastic stern bracket — that lets the motor sit higher for skinny water.

NT Series outboards (NT300 & NT600)

How they mount: NT motors clamp to the transom like a traditional outboard. Here, depth is set mainly by your transom height and the shaft length you choose — so the key decision is picking the right shaft before you ever hit the water.

Step 1 — Measure your transom height

Measure straight down from the top edge of the transom (where the motor clamps) to the bottom of the hull. That number tells you which shaft you need.

  • A standard small-boat transom is around 15 in.; taller transoms (some jon boats and skiffs) run about 20 in.
Step 2 — Match the shaft to the transom
  • NT300 — Standard 24.6 in. shaft: for standard (~15 in.) transoms on inflatables, tenders, and most jon boats.
  • NT300 — Long 29 in. shaft: for taller (~20 in.) transoms so the prop still sits deep enough.
  • NT600 — 26.8 in. shaft: the 6 HP model is built for boats up to 16 ft.
Step 3 — Check it on the water
  • With the motor down and the boat level, the cavitation plate should sit roughly level with the bottom of the hull (within ~1 in.), and the whole prop should be underwater.
  • Revving with little push? The motor is too high — you likely need the long shaft or a taller transom setup.
  • Sluggish or dragging? It may be sitting too deep for your hull.
